UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declined a request to meet Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, during his visit to London. Yunus had hoped to gain support for efforts to recover billions of dollars allegedly stolen by the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina.
According to the Financial Times, Yunus believes that the UK has a “moral” responsibility to help track down these funds, which he claims are largely hidden in the UK. However, despite his requests, Starmer did not agree to meet Yunus.
Yunus explained that the purpose of his trip to the UK was to gather stronger support for his cause. He also plans to meet Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), later this week, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Keir Starmer turned down a meeting request from Muhammad Yunus during his UK visit. Yunus aimed to garner support for efforts to recover funds allegedly siphoned off by the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Yunus is also set to meet BNP’s Tarique Rahman during his trip.
