Mass Casualties and the Need for Action
Minister Falconer began by condemning the ongoing mass casualty incidents in Gaza, where civilians are dying or being injured while attempting to access aid. The conflict, which has now lasted for 20 months, has left many people struggling to feed themselves and their families. Falconer emphasized that no one should face such risks when simply trying to survive, urging for an independent investigation into these tragic events. He called for those responsible to be held accountable.
The incidents, he noted, have occurred near new distribution sites set up by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), further underscoring the urgent need for aid to reach those affected by the conflict. Despite efforts by the Israeli Government to create new aid delivery systems, Falconer pointed out that warnings from the UK, the United Nations, and international aid groups about these operations have sadly come to fruition, resulting in severe consequences for civilians.
Israeli Measures and International Concerns
Falconer voiced strong criticism of Israel’s newly introduced aid delivery measures, describing them as inhumane. These measures, he argued, have not only increased desperation among Gaza’s population but have also put civilians at further risk. He called for the immediate end of Israel’s blockade on humanitarian aid into Gaza, emphasizing the need for food and other essential supplies to reach people across the region.
The UK Minister stressed that Israel must allow the United Nations (UN) and trusted international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) to safely deliver aid at the scale required to address the growing crisis. He also called for the protection of civilians, medical workers, and humanitarian facilities to ensure aid can reach those in need.
UK’s Humanitarian Support and Commitment
Falconer highlighted the significant support provided by the UK to help the people of Gaza. Over 465,000 individuals have received essential healthcare, 640,000 have been provided with food, and 275,000 people have gained improved access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services. This support has been facilitated through funding and partnerships, including with the British Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Just two weeks ago, the Minister for Development announced an additional £4 million in funding for the British Red Cross, as part of the wider £101 million support package for this financial year. Falconer reiterated the importance of ensuring that aid can continue to flow into Gaza, as the situation remains dire.
International Efforts and Ceasefire Resolution
Falconer also addressed the ongoing efforts by the international community to address the situation in Gaza. The UN Security Council is expected to consider a resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the lifting of Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid. The UK will continue to support these efforts, using its vote in favor of the resolution.
In addition, Falconer expressed continued support for international partners such as the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, who are working to secure a ceasefire and long-term peace. He emphasized that a ceasefire is necessary not only for the release of hostages but also for the broader goal of achieving a long-term political solution.
Condemnation of Hamas and Call for a Two-State Solution
Falconer strongly condemned Hamas for its role in the conflict, demanding that it release all hostages immediately and unconditionally. He stated that Hamas must have no role in the future governance of Gaza. The Minister reiterated that a two-state solution is the only viable path to lasting peace, security, and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians. He welcomed the leadership of France and Saudi Arabia in chairing an international conference later this month to discuss the path forward.
