Forrester's Digest: VodafoneThree is investing £11 billion in UK 5G

VodafoneThree, the joint venture between Vodafone and Three UK, is set to transform the UK’s digital landscape. Their ambitious £11 billion investment is aimed at creating the UK’s best 5G network. The project is being funded entirely privately and promises to provide widespread benefits for customers across the UK.

Max Taylor, CEO of VodafoneThree, has emphasized that this investment will connect every community and help fuel the country’s future growth.

A Massive Boost to the UK’s Economy

As part of their project, VodafoneThree plans to invest in extensive network infrastructure. This will not only improve mobile connectivity but will also create significant job opportunities across the UK. The rollout of 5G SA (Standalone) technology, which is key to the project, will require an immense amount of work in engineering, construction, and telecom tower maintenance.

The investment is expected to generate around 9,000 jobs over the eight-year build period, with the peak years (2-6) seeing a rise to 13,000 jobs. This large-scale project will provide employment in every region of the UK, boosting the local economy.

Partnership with AST for European Coverage

In addition to its focus on the UK, VodafoneThree has formed a partnership with AST, which will extend across Europe. This collaboration aims to offer complete geographic coverage in all European regions.

By combining their resources, VodafoneThree and AST will distribute satellite services across European mobile network operators, further enhancing their global network reach.

Revolutionizing Broadband Connectivity in the UK

VodafoneThree is also eyeing a major role in the broadband sector. The company plans to provide fast and reliable broadband to homes across the UK through fibre or fibre-like speeds. This effort will blend Vodafone’s full fibre footprint with Three’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), with the aim of covering every home in the UK.

Starting with a new partnership with Community Fiber, and backed by existing partnerships with CityFiber and Openreach, VodafoneThree is determined to challenge the broadband market and improve internet access for all.

Creating Jobs and Supporting the UK Workforce

Further investment in local communities is also part of Vodafone Three’s plan. The company has announced the creation of two new customer care centres in Belfast and Sheffield. These centres will bring 400 jobs back to the UK, adding to the growing number of opportunities created by the company.

Moreover, Vodafone Three has made it clear that no retail jobs will be cut, ensuring that the focus remains on building a sustainable workforce as the network grows.

This £11 billion investment by Vodafone Three is just the beginning of a digital revolution in the UK. With 5G technology, faster broadband, and the creation of thousands of jobs, the company is laying the groundwork for the future of digital connectivity in the country.

As more areas benefit from improved access to mobile and broadband services, the UK will be well-positioned to meet its digital ambitions and further enhance its economic growth.
